There can be many reasons why a watch stops working. If it's a quartz watch, the most likely cause is a dead battery. It should be replaced, remembering to use a battery designed for that model. When manual and automatic watches stop, it's usually because the power reserve has been exhausted. In this case, wind the watch by turning the crown approximately 40 times to the appropriate setting. In manual winding watches, the crown resists, indicating that the movement is fully charged. An automatic watch will continue to wind, so it's worth counting the number of turns. Keep in mind that some watches have screw-down crowns, which must be unscrewed before use.
Mechanical watches use a tightly wound mainspring to power their movement. This type of drive is divided into two categories: manual watches, in which the mainspring is wound by hand (usually once every two days), and automatic watches, in which the mainspring is wound by a special rotor located in the watch case, which moves with the movement of the wrist.
Quartz watches are powered by the vibrations of a quartz plate, which is powered by a battery with an average lifespan of about five years. They are more accurate but more sensitive to temperature.
Many factors influence the battery life of a quartz watch. These include the level of technological advancement and the number and type of functions the watch has. The weather conditions it is exposed to can also have an impact. The estimated lifespan for a watch equipped only with a date function is between 1 and 5 years.
